1. This comes down to size. An image is made up of pixels. The mega pixel rating on a camera contains approximately that many millions of pixels. Those quickly add up on your camera's memory card. Now imagine you take a picture at night and half the screen is black. No need to record each one of those separately just tell the card half the pixels are black. Now you have half a pictures worth of saving on another picture. This is a simplified way of looking at it but gives you a general idea of why compression is so important.
