How do you get into second life 3D digital world? What is the value?

Second life was advertised as a means of visual travel yet I only get advertising. Is this available at no cost?

1. Maybe you should read my post carefully, I said don't gather the facts based on just the media. Maybe YOU should read carefully or better yet, spend 10 years in GED. Forget 3d digital world, you have to work on your common sense.
